Bush fire destroys homes at Engadine north
of Helensburgh

Last Christmas the Helensburgh area survived
a massive fire storm with many homes and
other property lost or damaged.
The fires are back yet again destroying homes
and putting lives at risk.
A fire was reported in a small area of bush
that quickly transformed into a raging monster
and within minutes was up a hill destroying
homes and properties.
Over 60 Community Fire Units were activated
as fires threatened Engadine and surounding
suburbs.
Fire unit leaders said that the speed of
the units responces is what saved many homes in the Engadine area.
There were at least ten homes destroyed and
many with severe fire damage with no reported
loss of life.
Unseasonably dry conditions contributed to
the latest fires three times drier then last
year.
Now a sense of panic when smoke is sighted
exists as people report smoke in the area.
